ROSTER MANAGEMENT - WEEK 9

By Michael H. Osinski
@mhosinskiLLP

Michael Vick. The last 10 years of Fantasy Football (at least for me) has been about Vick. I am wearing a jersey as I type this. I always seem to have him on my team(s).  Two teams this year.

One time after landing in the airport, I stayed in the airport bar to watch a Falcons-Eagles playoff game delaying the cab ride home.

Why in a column on roster management am I spending so much time on Michael Vick? Well, as I said, I have Vick in 2 of my 3 leagues. Yesterday I had the saddest Fantasy Football moment of my life when I hit "send" on the roster move replacing Michael Vick with Terrelle Pryor.

I did it. I waived Vick. I think I felt my own hamstring pop. I am still sad today. The fact of the matter is that team can still make the playoffs and I have to look ahead.

That brings me to the other "Vick League" and this column. My "League of Record." The wheels are falling off. I lost Vick, Julio Jones, Amendola, David Wilson. I have CJ Spiller. Somehow I can still make the playoffs. But it all starts with finding a replacement for Michael Vick.

QB

I am only carrying 1 QB. When Vick first went out, I lucked into Tannehill. He is not available now. The best guy available is Carson Palmer and he is on a bye week.

I ranked the QBs by Week 9 projected stats because I expect a couple QBs to land on the waiver wire after the big bye weeks. Josh McCown, Josh Freeman, Geno Smith, Jason Campbell, Case Keenum, Thad Lewis, Mike Glennon and Kellen Clemens. That's it!

I have trade feelers out for Pryor and Andy Dalton, but I am not optimistic. (Dalton would cost Larry Fitzgerald).

To complicate matters, the guy who owns Peyton Manning is only carrying 1 QB, Manning is on bye, and he has a better waiver priority than I. He has settled on McCown. I'm not sure why.

I don't like Freeman right now. Thad Lewis? Kellen Clemens? Mike Glennon?  Nope.

That leaves the final 3 I am considering: Campbell, Geno and Keenum.  They all have bad matchups. Geno throws too many picks and New Orleans is playing pretty good defense. I can't get my head around Case Keenum as a starter in the NFL.

So, unless Nick Foles lands back on the waiver wire, or my offer for Pryor is accepted...I am going to try and reach the playoffs with...gulp...Jason Campbell.

Twitter rumor had Tim Tebow in the Philly airport yesterday.

RB

We have had some pretty good luck finding RBs. We touted Andre Ellington in Week 5(and predicted the decline of Rashard Mendenhall). We knew Joe Randle was the guy to replace DeMarco Murray. We were right that Zac Stacy would win the job in STL.

Those days are over. The cubbard is bare. Half way through the season, only 8 RBs are on pace for over 1,000 yards. Geez, that's only 60 yards a game!

So who is available?

Well, if Ellington, Stacy, Peyton Hillis, Mike James or even Willis McGahee is available and you need to cover your Knowshon Moreno or Frank Gore byes, get them. If, like in my League of Record, they have already been snatched up, consider these options:

Brandon Bolden. LeGarrette Blount. I have Stevan Ridley in a league and yell at the TV anytime I watch the Patriots. But, the truth is, Bolden and Blount can approach 10 points in a standard scoring league.

Mike Tolbert gets goal line carries. I feel for De Angelo Williams owners. But if I needed a RB for a week, Tolbert is not a bad option

Trent Richardson is having trouble. I don't know whether he doesn't get the offense, or whether he is injured...or whether he is just not that good. This makes Donald Brown a decent option.

Other options that make a little sense include Daniel Thomas and Tashard Choice.  Talk about bottom of the barrel.

Also, if you can burn the roster spot for a couple weeks, Andre Brown and Shane Vereen are probably still out there.

WR

Marvin Jones is owned in our league. In most others he is not. He had 4 TDs! He actually had TD catches in the previous 2 weeks as well. ESPNs Matthew Berry started him last week.

Kenny Stills is available. I mentioned him a couple times this season (actually had him on the roster a week.) If you roster or play him, it's only in hopes you get a week like last week.

Truth is, there are some guys out there. They just are not much to look at.

The best of the bunch seem to be Kendall Wright, Lance Moore, Ted Ginn, Jr. and Aaron Dobson.

I don't know what to make of Rod Streater, David Nelson or even Dexter McCluster.

And, the Vikings still don't know what to do with Cordarelle Patterson. And Jacoby Jones belongs back on Dancing With The Stars.

In other words, it may be a good time to go look for a trade to get a guy who has had his bye already and looks to be getting stronger (Keenan Allen, Pierre Garcon, TY Hilton?)

TE

Lots of good TEs on bye. At least there are a couple starters hanging around. They are not Vernon Davis or Julius Thomas, but a couple have potential.

Garrett Graham is available. Tim Wright looks as if Glennon will throw his way. I like Anthony Fasano as well.

Stay away from Andrew Quarless. He is a blocker. Zach Miller and Scott Chandler are kind of the same guy. Roll the dice and maybe you get a 2 TD day.

I like Zach Ertz, but wouldn't get him until we figure out who will throw him the ball.

Jordan Reed is long gone.

DEF

Last week I streamed Carolina. First time all year I ran with the same defense two weeks in a row. Didn't get the 20 I got Week 7, but most weeks a 9 is ok.

If you have SF, DEN you need someone. Dallas might be a good pick as they draw Minnesota. New Orleans draws the Jets. Tennessee gets the Rams.

K

Adam Vinateri may have been waived in your league because of his bye last week. He is dependable. Rob Bironas is back. Kai Forbath is healthy. I have Janikowski and figure to keep him against Philly.

Good luck this week! I can answer any specific line up or trade questions you have at @mhosinskiLLP
